Greetings to my fellow Mountaineers!
We finally bid goodbye to the snow and the campus is beginning to show signs of spring!
The search for WVU’s 22nd president has come to a close, and we are pleased that Mike Garrison (‘91 BA, ‘96 JD) has been named the next president of our great University. Mike Garrison is a loyal, committed Mountaineer and native West Virginian who has a great understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing WVU. I know Mike and his wife Heather (‘95 BA, ‘96 MS, ‘00 JD), will bring great enthusiasm and dedication to our alma mater.
Graduation is quickly approaching and soon more than 3,500 men and women will be ushered in as our newest alumni. These young men and women are extremely eager to make their mark on society. As they make their way to various parts of the country, as well as the world, we hope you will continue to offer them your wisdom, advice, and Mountaineer hospitality.
This past fall, we rolled out our On-Line Community featuring classmate searches, news about alumni, e-mail forwarding, and much, much more. This new community will help you stay connected to your classmates and other friends you met at WVU. This new service also provides you with a career network where you can post your resume and search for jobs through a robust job bank featuring more than 400 participating colleges and universities. If you are looking to hire a WVU grad, make sure you post it on the community!
Did you capture a great shot of a campus building or athletic event? Make sure you send it to us for inclusion in our 2008 calendar photo contest. To date, we’ve received nearly 100 wonderful photos from members. The contest ends June 29, so be sure to send your photos to Tara Curtis at tecurtis@mail.wvu.edu or mail them to us via U.S. mail. This is a great way to get involved – we look forward to another terrific calendar!
In May, we will welcome the Class of 1957 home to Morgantown for Emeritus Club activities. The weekend includes a number of terrific events for attendees. Summer is just a few short months away, but we are already planning another busy season of travel. Our 2007 Gold & Blue Weekend will be held July 26-28 at Stonewall Resort. This is a great opportunity to return to the state, catch up with old friends and show your support of the Alumni Association. We have added a wonderful event for those who don’t golf – a cooking demonstration by Stonewall Chef Dale Hawkins. For a complete list of the latest happenings/events, go to our Web site and click on the Calendar of Events at http://alumni.wvu.edu.
Lastly, I wanted to provide you with an update on the progress of our new alumni center. The dirt is flying as the University and other local companies work hard to prepare the site for the new building. With every inch of dirt moved, we get one step closer to making this much needed home a reality. Thanks to the support of our alumni, we have raised nearly $9 million for the building campaign. We continue to be amazed by the generous contributions and dedication to this important project. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in helping us to move forward with our plans for “A New Home for Mountaineers.”
In Mountaineer Spirit,
Stephen L. Douglas
