Samuel J. Cann Sr.
Sam Cann, a lifelong resident of Harrison County, is currently serving his sixth term in the West Virginia House of Delegates where he is chair of the House Small Business and Economic Development Committee. He is a senior member of the House Finance Committee and serves on the Banking and Insurance Committee, as well as the Industry and Labor Committee. He is co-chair of the Joint Commission on Economic Development and serves on the Interim Committees for Rulemaking Review and Parks and Recreation.
During his service in the House of Delegates, Sam has received numerous awards, including Legislator of the Year by the State Association of Parks and Recreation and the WV EMT Coalition. West Virginians for Life also recognized him with the Defender of Babies award.
Sam has been employed in the oil and gas industry since 1981 and is currently the Appalachian Business Development Manager for Dominion Field Services. He is past president of the Independent Oil and Gas Association of West Virginia where he received the “Gunslinger” award for lifetime achievement. He also served two terms on the board of directors for the West Virginia Special Olympics and the Watters Smith Memorial State Park Foundation.
The Cann family has strong ties to WVU. All seven of Sam’s brothers and sisters graduated from WVU and four of his five children will be enrolled as graduate/undergraduate students at WVU this fall. Sam, a life member of the WVU Alumni Association, received his bachelor’ and master’s degrees from WVU in 1975 and 1976, respectively. He is a member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club and the Basketball Legacy Fund. Sam and his wife, Phyllis Mazza Cann, live in Bridgeport.
