To lift up and celebrate those professional success stories, an anonymous donor generously provided a gift to establish the Academy of Distinguished Alumni interactive display at The Erickson Alumni Center. WVU Alum turns challenges into opportunities
Lt. Col. Eric Amissah dreamed of becoming a pilot for the U.S. Air Force. While enrolled in the WVU ROTC program he learned during a flight physical that he had scarring in the back of the retina and his dream of competing for a pilot slot was no longer a reality. And while many people would have given up, Amissah pushed on with the rugged determination that defines so many Mountaineers. Read more.

At age 89, Lou Birurakis remains Mountaineer Strong
As a young boy, Lou Birurakis spent an abundance of time figuring out ways to watch WVU football. He sold Coca-Cola at games so he could watch his favorite team. And while Lou never played organized football growing up - he played at home with a milk can - he would become part of a team that eventually won the 1949 Sun Bowl. Hear more about Lou's story.
Couple's gift honors Mountaineer Mascot's hard work, determination
To don the buckskins and represent West Virginia University as the Mountaineer mascot is an honor that has been bestowed on fewer than 65 alumni. The mascot, a beloved symbol for fans, students and alumni all over the world, embodies the true spirit of the University.
